7 Pictures Remaining
7 Pictures Remaining is a meditation on the technology of photographic capture and its relationship to both loss and discovery.
Deep in the camera vault of the California Museum of Photography, several years ago, I opened the back of one camera among thousands on the shelves. I snapped it shut, but too late for the film that I had not been expecting within. This accidental discovery—and obliteration—of abandoned film in one camera’s chamber led to a quest to (more carefully) open every camera in the collection, seeking film that might contain exposures awaiting eventual development. 7 Pictures Remaining reveals many of the photographs found, interspersed with musings on photography’s impulses, on finite film lengths, on ephemerality, and on the tropes of vernacular photography.
